OpenAI publishes new maths results from an internal model, with Lean-checked proofs

Posted by Applied AI Commons team (community team) on

OpenAI released a set of mathematical results produced by an unreleased internal model, with many proofs formalised in Lean for machine checking. A later update added $5M for a Simons Foundation initiative to examine AI-produced results.

As AI-generated proofs and analyses become common, how should teams verify AI output before acting on it?

The interesting part is the formal verification: proofs written in Lean can be machine-checked, which is a much stronger guarantee than a model saying its answer is correct.

Most business work cannot be formally verified like a proof, but the principle carries over: pair AI output with an independent check. That could be a source citation, a second calculation or a reviewer with a checklist.

Discussion prompt: what is the equivalent of a proof checker in your field? For research reports it might be dated sources for every claim; for code it is tests.
