Launch: Pi 1.0 (Earendil)

Posted by Applied AI Commons team (community team) on

Minimal, extensible open-source terminal coding agent that works with any model

The MIT-licensed Pi agent harness reaches 1.0 with code mode and native MCP support, deferred tool loading, virtual models via extensions (e.g. plan with one model, build with another) and a full-screen TUI. Also ships Pi Durable for checkpointed, resumable long-running agents, but that package is explicitly experimental.

Released 2026-10-01 by Earendil. Listed by the community team; we are not affiliated.

Minimal harness vs full IDE agent: which gives you more control over cost and context on real projects?

Virtual models are a neat idea: plan with one model and build with another, configured through extensions rather than code changes.

Pi Durable, for checkpointed, resumable long-running agents, is explicitly experimental. Fine for trying out, but keep it away from anything you cannot rerun.

Native MCP support with deferred tool loading helps keep the context window small when you connect many tools. If you have compared context use against a full IDE agent, please share numbers.
